As humanity ventures further into space, one earthly treasure is set to join the journey: champagne. Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar, a groundbreaking project initiated in 2017, is poised to bring the iconic ritual of champagne celebration into the cosmos. This ambitious undertaking marries the traditions of AOC Champagne with the technological demands of space exploration, thanks to a collaboration between Maison Mumm and Axiom Space.

A Champagne Designed for Space

Creating champagne for space travel is no small feat. The absence of gravity, the unique pressure requirements of the bottle, and the need for food compatibility all posed complex challenges. Enter Octave de Gaulle, founder of SPADE, who designed Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar with support from CNES (the French space agency) and the Comat design office. Every detail, from material selection to ergonomics, was meticulously crafted to ensure the champagne could be safely and intuitively enjoyed in zero gravity.

After four years of intensive research and development, Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar achieved full compliance with both space and AOC Champagne specifications. This certification not only attests to its readiness for space travel but also signifies a new chapter for Maison Mumm. Soon, the champagne will embark on Axiom Space missions, bringing an iconic Earthly ritual to the vast expanse of the universe.

"In space, there is a loss of temporal reference points and terrestrial habits. For both balance and well-being, it is essential to maintain a link with Earth and its culture. As a terrestrial symbol of the art of living, champagne has this universal appeal." - Jean-François Clervoy – European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut

A Taste of Terrestrial Luxury in Space

Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar isn’t just champagne; it’s a symbol of Earth’s culture and savoir-faire, bridging the gap between our planet and the stars. To adapt to the altered sense of smell in space, Laurent Fresnet, Mumm’s Cellar Master, carefully selected a blend crafted from the 2016 harvest. Dominated by Pinot Noir, the House’s signature grape, the champagne is enriched with reserve wines from the past five years.

The result is a complex profile featuring notes of ripe yellow fruit, vine peach, dried fruit, hazelnut, and praline, enhanced by a touch of vanilla and pastry from wines aged in oak barrels. Even in space, the champagne delivers a refined sensory experience, allowing astronauts to enjoy a taste of Earth’s finest offerings.

"Technology serves a greater purpose here: the champagne captures the very essence of a terroir, a climate, an ancestral savoir-faire and a tasting experience for all those who will travel far from Earth" - Octave de Gaulle – Founder of SPADE

Champagne: A Universal Ritual

At its heart, Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar is about more than just luxury—it’s about connection. Champagne has long been a symbol of celebration and togetherness, and bringing it to space allows us to carry a piece of terrestrial culture into this new era of human exploration. It’s a reminder that even as we look outward to the stars, we remain deeply connected to our home planet.

As space exploration continues to push boundaries, projects like Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar not only celebrate human ingenuity but also invite us to reflect on the innovations and discoveries that shape our lives here on Earth. From the vineyards of Champagne to the vastness of space, this is a toast to progress, tradition, and the endless possibilities of exploration.
