Can you share a bit about your journey in the hospitality industry and how you got started?
I began in finance before shifting to the food and beverage industry, where I completed an internship. I quickly realized the importance of the rooms division in hotel revenue, which led me to pursue a career in rooms operations. Over time, I expanded into sales, marketing, and leadership roles. I've had the privilege of working in 11 countries, and for the past nine years, I’ve called Thailand home, where I continue to build on my global experience.
What is your long-term goal for your property? What does success look like for this property and for you and your team?
At Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok, our long-term goal is to be trendsetters in the luxury hotel space, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and community. We’ve had a fantastic 2024 with financial success and awards like the MICHELIN Key and T+L Tastemaker’s Best Bars. Our collaborations with local artisans and focus on sustainability, such as reducing food waste and promoting eco-friendly practices, are central to our mission. We're also making strides in environmental initiatives with energy-saving sensors and waste management systems. Success is about creating a positive impact for guests, our team, and the community.
How do you see the hospitality industry evolving in the next few years?
The hospitality industry will continue evolving with rapid technological advancements and a shift towards personalized experiences. Gen Z is leading the change with their demand for seamless tech interactions like AI-driven services and mobile check-ins. Meanwhile, older generations still appreciate traditional, in-person services. Balancing these preferences will be crucial. Health and wellness are also growing priorities for travelers, with increased demand for plant-based meals and other health-conscious options.
What personal qualities do you believe have been most critical to your success in the hospitality industry?
Discipline, flexibility, and resilience are vital for success in hospitality. Creativity is important, but it’s discipline that ensures consistent execution. A successful hotelier must be able to adapt to changes, address challenges, and build strong relationships with guests and colleagues. Without discipline to follow through and resilience to handle setbacks, even the most creative ideas won’t lead to sustained success.
What advice would you give to young professionals aspiring to build a career in luxury hotel management? Are there any specific skills or experiences you would recommend they focus on to stand out in the industry?
For young professionals, gaining experience in various departments is essential. Starting at the ground level helps you understand the importance of each role and service quality. Be flexible, learn from others, and focus on building a well-rounded skill set. It’s also crucial to maintain the right information and keep improving, as that foundation will support long-term growth in the luxury hotel sector.
