Can you share a bit about your journey in the hospitality industry and how you got started?

My journey in the hospitality industry began in the mid-90s, working as a bellman at Hilton Barcelona in Spain. Starting from this foundational role, I gained firsthand experience interacting with guests and understanding the nuances of their needs. Over time, I transitioned through various positions in guest services and operations, which built my understanding of hotel management from the ground up.

In 2000, I embarked on an international journey to Asia, beginning in Shanghai. This opened the door to opportunities as a General Manager in diverse locations, including the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. In 2014, I joined Marriott International, managing dual-branded hotels and convention centers in China, where I oversaw complex operations, pre-opening projects, and staff development. My career has been defined by a passion for creating memorable guest experiences and a commitment to developing multicultural teams. After 30 years in the industry, I’m excited to lead the upcoming Meliá Pattaya Hotel, blending my extensive experience with Meliá’s signature Spanish hospitality.

What is your long-term goal for your property? What does success look like for this property and for your and your team?

My vision for the Meliá Pattaya Hotel is to establish it as a flagship urban resort that embodies Meliá’s hallmark Spanish hospitality and its commitment to guest wellbeing. Success for the property means becoming the preferred choice for leisure and business travelers visiting Pattaya, thanks to our exceptional facilities, including a Chinese restaurant with a rooftop sky bar, two ballrooms featuring natural daylight with LED screens, a beach club, and a dedicated spa. For my team, success is about creating a culture of excellence where each associate feels empowered to deliver personalized, memorable guest experiences.

How do you see the hospitality industry evolving in the next few years?

The hospitality industry is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by sustainability, technology, and evolving guest expectations. Sustainable practices will no longer be optional but integral to a property’s identity, as travelers increasingly prefer eco-conscious brands.

Personalization will continue to gain importance, with technology playing a critical role in tailoring guest experiences. Digital tools will enable seamless stays, from mobile check-ins to AI-powered concierge services. The rise of hybrid travel, combining work and leisure, also necessitates adaptable spaces that cater to both productivity and relaxation. Wellness-focused amenities, such as dedicated spas and fitness programs, will be key to attracting health-conscious travelers.

Hotels that embrace these trends while remaining true to their unique brand essence will thrive in the coming years.

What personal qualities do you believe have been most critical to your success in the hospitality industry?

Adaptability has been a cornerstone of my career, enabling me to navigate different markets and cultures effectively. Working across Asia and Europe taught me the importance of cultural sensitivity and respecting diverse perspectives.

Resilience has helped me overcome challenges inherent in managing complex operations, while emotional intelligence has been crucial for building strong teams and fostering a collaborative work environment. I also value the ability to listen and empower others, which creates a sense of ownership among team members and drives collective success.

Strong leadership and the willingness to lead by example have enabled me to inspire trust and motivate teams to achieve shared goals, even in demanding circumstances.
