His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was announced to have passed away at Siriraj Hospital at 3.52pm on Thursday, 13th of October, 2016.

An increasing frequency of news reports pertaining to His Majesty’s deteriorating health throughout the week started to prepare the nation for the worst.

The world’s longest reigning monarch would have turned 89 years old on the 5th of December this year and on June 9 earlier this year, Thais celebrated his 70th year on the throne.

The government has announced a one year period of mourning.  While hotels will be operating normally over the next year, during the initial time of mourning, there will be a distinct absence of celebrations and festivities.

All foreigners visiting or doing business in Thailand are urged to employ empathy, respect and most importantly patience while with Thais. For most Thais, His Majesty is seen as a father figure, and in such, the passing of His Majesty is felt just as losing one’s own family member.

Thailand is in uncharted political, social and emotional territory. Despite having gone through political and social upheaval in recent years, Thailand’s tourism sector has remained resilient and it is anticipated that such resilience will continue over the following years.
